A group headed by Lee Wayne Haynes of Las Vegas has filed a new petition aiming to recall Kenny Guinn as governor.
To force a recall, Nevada law requires petitions bearing at least 25 percent of the total number of people who voted in the election which put Guinn in office be filed with the Secretary of State's Office within 90 days after the petition drive is begun.
In Guinn's case, that would require 128,343 valid signatures.
A similar petition was begun by George Harris of Las Vegas after the conclusion of last year's contentious legislative sessions and the approval of a tax package raising some $833 million over two years. But that effort failed to gather enough signatures.
While Harris and other organizers refused to file the petitions they did gather, they admitted to having only about 12,000 names. Others involved have said the actual number was far lower.
