Miller to speak at Wolf Pack Dinner

Reno - Jon Miller, the voice of the San Francisco Giants and ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball", as well as one of baseball's finest announcers and most recognizable voices, will be the keynote speaker at the University of Nevada's 21st annual Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner on Monday, February 7.

This annual Nevada event will take place in the Grand Exposition Hall of the Silver Legacy Resort/Casino. Doors open at 6 p.m. with hosted cocktails. The Silver Legacy Resort/Casino will serve a sit-down dinner at 7 p.m. and the program, including a small live auction, will follow. The title sponsor of the event is Morrey Distributing.

Miller recently finished his 16th season as anchor of ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" and ninth season as the voice of the San Francisco Giants on KNBR Radio and KTVU-TV.

Noted for his eloquent game description, golden voice and sense of humor, Miller has been nominated six times for an ACE Award, emblematic of cable television excellence, and won the award in 1991 and 1996 for his play-by-play work. Nominated twice for a national Emmy Award, Miller has broadcast the World Series on ESPN Radio the past six years.

Miller has also been privileged to call several memorable baseball moments, including Cal Ripken's breaking of Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played and Barry Bonds' setting the single-season home run record.

The Bay Area native began his Major League Baseball broadcasting career at age 22 with the Oakland A's in 1974. He later did radio and television for the Texas Rangers in 1978-79 before moving on to Boston, where he spent three years, 1980-82, in the Red Sox radio booth. In 1983, Miller became the radio voice of the Baltimore Orioles, a position he held for 14 years until he began work with San Francisco.

Miller also has an extensive broadcasting background in basketball, soccer and ice hockey. From 1979-82, he did 10-16 games a season for the NBA's Golden State Warriors and, prior to that, called University of San Francisco basketball games for five seasons. In 1977, Miller did soccer play-by-play for the NASL's San Jose Earthquakes and Washington Diplomats for CBS-TV.

The author of "Confessions of a Baseball Purist," Miller and his wife, Janine, currently reside in Moss Beach, Calif. They are parents to three daughters, Michelle, Holly and Emilie, and a son, Alexander.

Tickets for the Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner are $175 each (tables of 10 are available for $1,500), $75 for children 12 and under, and may be purchased by calling the AAUN, 784-4870, ext. 246. All proceeds will benefit the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Nevada.
