Carson City

300 years of continuous membership celebrated by American Legion

American Legion Capitol Post 4 and Auxiliary Unit 4 will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday night for dinner followed by general membership meetings at 7 p.m. in the Veteran's Annex of the Heroes Memorial Building, Second and Curry streets. Five members of the American Legion will be honored with 60-year certificates of service recognizing their 300 collective years of continuous membership while Auxiliary Unit 4 welcomes National President Sandi Dutton.

This is the first visit of an Auxiliary National Officer in recent history. All Legionnaires and Auxiliary members are invited to attend. If there are any questions, please call Auxiliary Unit 4 President Mary Anne Jennings at 882-5196 or Capitol Post 4 Commander Tony Vaughn at 265-6982.

Muscle Powered resumes weekly walks Wednesday

Muscle Powered, Citizens for a Bikeable and Walkable Carson City, resumes its local walk program in April. The morning walk will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The walk will be on the Westside Bike Trail to the Jack Davis Observatory. Walkers will meet at Bristol Place and Longview Way near the Long Ranch Park. Lunch Hour Urban Walks begin Thursday. The walk begins promptly at 12:10 p.m. at Comma Coffee. These walks will follow selected routes downtown. Contact the walk leader for details at 841-6810.

Muscle Powered will be hosting a morning walk at 8:30 a.m. April 20. The walk will be on Prison Hill South. This 3- to 5- mile walk has some steep climbs. To get to the starting point, drive to the east end of Koontz, cross Edmonds, take the dirt road straight ahead, turn left at the wooden sign, and continue to the parking loop. Odds and Ends for sale at Empire Elementary School

Empire Elementary School will hold its semi-annual indoor Odds and Ends Sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the school multi-purpose room, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive.

Rotary clubs seek area professionals for goodwill exchange to Japan

Rotary District 5190, which includes the Rotary Club of Carson City, is seeking four outstanding professionals to visit Japan for a month-long exchange between Oct. 8 and Nov. 8, as a part of a Group Study Exchange team. The group will visit central Japan. Group Study Exchange is program of The Rotary Foundation.

Through the program, teams of young business and professional people, accompanied by a Rotarian team leader, exchange visits between paired areas in different nations. The Japanese team will be visiting northern California and Nevada in April and May. During visits team members share personal knowledge of their own country and experience the customs, vocations and lifestyles of another.

The purpose of the Group Study Exchange is to promote international understanding and goodwill through person-to-person contact. While abroad, team members stay in Rotarian's homes and have the opportunity to meet their professional counterparts. The also give presentations to Rotary clubs and other groups about their home country and region.

The Rotary Foundation provides transportation and local Rotary clubs provide food, transportation and lodging. Team members pay only for personal and incidental expenses.

Applicants must be employed full-time in a recognized business or profession. Team members must be within the age range of 25 to 40 and cannot be directly related to a Rotarian.

Silver City Library celebrates National Library Week

Any Silver City adult who drops in to browse the volunteer library between 6-7 p.m. Thursday will be entered in a drawing for a new, signed copy of local writer David Toll's book "Squaw Tom Speaks: Stories From Old Nevada!"

Please drop by and browse the volunteer library at the Silver City Firehouse this Thursday during National Library Week. You can see what's going on at the after school club, The Internet Café, and borrow from the growing collection of books, videos, audio tapes and periodicals.
