Piper's Opera house celebrates 120th birthday
Piper's Opera House will celebrate its 120th birthday from noon-6 p.m. April 24.
Festivities will include: an unveiling of the recently restored Piper's Opera House Uncle Tom's Cabin painted advertising oleo "the Slave Auction in New Orleans;" a lecture by historian Scott Casper who teaches and studies the Civil War; the issuance of commemorative 1885 Carson City freshly minted Piper's Opera House coin; and in true John Piper tradition, a rocking celebratory New Orleans-styled jazz party with the 19-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra.
Piper's is throwing a party to say thanks to all the good people who have helped along its 132-year institutional history. Two previous audience chambers were devastated by fires in 1875 and 1883, the third and current auditorium dates from 1885.
The UNR Reno Jazz Orchestra will be providing the back beat for this shimmering, razzle-dazzle Piper's 120th Birthday fĂȘte. The 19-piece UNR Jazz Orchestra celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month is appearing courtesy of the Music Performance Fund & Recording Industries of America and the American Federation of Musicians, local 368 Reno.
Admission is Free. The opera house is at the corner of Union and B streets, in Virginia City.
