The volunteer coordinator for the Carson City Sheriff's Department is expected to resign today after being arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of drunken driving.
At the request of Sheriff Kenny Furlong, Thomas Szupello, 57, will no longer be in charge of the department's volunteer staff and citizens' academies, Furlong said.
According to the arrest report, a Carson City deputy allegedly spotted a "grossly intoxicated," Szupello exiting the Piñon Plaza's east doors shortly after midnight. When Szupello activated his vehicle's remote door locks and lights, the deputy called out to him and asked if he intended to drive.
Szupello allegedly said, "No." The deputy told Szupello to wait inside the casino, and he would call a taxi for him.
After calling a cab, the deputy did a walk-through of the business and was leaving the casino when he allegedly saw Szupello driving his vehicle around the south side of the building, where the deputy stopped him and had him perform a series of field sobriety tests.
"(Szupello) failed all tests," the deputy wrote in his report.
A retired Reno police officer, Szupello was booked into the Carson City Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor drunken driving. His bail was set at $1,132.
