A look at professional development plans in other Nevada school districts (as supplied by Ron Beck from the Carson City School District)

• Churchill County: Professional development days are every Wednesday after school from 3-4:30 p.m. Mandatory development time and other meetings cannot exceed seven hours a month. The seven hours are written into the teaching contract. Teachers are not paid extra.

• Clark County: Schools have the option of professional development on a school-by-school basis, with late starts and early-release schedules at different schools.

• Douglas County: Uses the five institute days and five minimum days for professional development. Teaching contract written for 186 days. Schools can use several of those days for professional development.

• Elko County: Each school has its own schedule for professional development, with all schools using an early release schedule on either Wednesdays or Fridays from one to two hours. As instruction time cannot be lost, school days must be extended or time made up during shortened lunch or other ways.

• Lander County: Uses their institute days for professional development. Is looking at a four-day school week next year with one Friday a month for professional development.

• Lincoln County: Teacher work day starts at 7:30 a.m. Student school day starts at 8:30 a.m. Most schools use at least two of those hours each week for professional development. Early release every Friday at 1:30 p.m. for professional development until 3 p.m.

• Lyon County: Schools are released early one day every week for one hour, some on Wednesdays, some on Fridays. Other schools have a late start on Fridays.

• Pershing County: The first Wednesday of every month is a one-hour late-start day.

• Washoe County: Schools have their own professional development plans, with late starts and early releases at various schools to meet circumstances.
