Carson City

State employee rally today at Legislature

Nevada Classified Employees will rally in front of the Legislature from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. today. The rally is to raise public awareness about critical issues facing the Legislature this year.

The top issues for state workers this session include preserving benefits, receiving a cost of living increase, and achieving the Nevada Workplace Relations Act through AB484. A variety of legislators are scheduled to address the crowd. For information, call 882-3910.

BLM names deputy director for operations

Lawrence "Larry" Benna has been named deputy director for operations of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Benna has served as assistant director for business and fiscal resources and chief financial officer for the BLM since 2004, after serving as its budget director since 1997.

He succeeds Francis Cherry, who retired from the BLM in February.

He assumes a key post at the interior department agency that oversees more federal land than any other agency. His appointment was effective April 22.

Kids' pottery class begins Tuesday

"Pottery for Kids" will be offered for four Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m., starting Tuesday. Cost of the session at the Brewery Arts Center is $50.

This class is geared toward 7-year-olds through teens. Students will explore hand-building with clay using methods such as slab and coil. They will also glaze their projects and come away with several works of art.

Show & Shine Car Show in Lampe Park

The Douglas County Senior Center will host its Big Mama's Show & Shine Car Show May 8 at the Lampe Park Pavilion in Gardnerville. Check-in is from 8-10 a.m., show and shine from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and the awards presentation is at 3 p.m. There will be music, food, classic cars and raffle prizes. To register your car, stop by the senior center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville or call (775) 783-6455. Registration fee is $45, postmarked by today, or $50 postmarked after today. Day-of-show registration will be accepted.

"Advanced Resource Management: Hydrology: Interdisciplinary Modeling for Aquatic Ecosystems" will be taught July 17-22 in Tahoe City.

The course worth 1 or 3 graduate credits meets from 1-8 p.m. July 17; from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. July 18-21 and from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 22. Additional work online is required June 17-July 15; July 23-Aug. 5. Classes will be at the Granlibakken Conference Center, 725 Granlibakken Road, Tahoe City.

Join national specialists from around the country for a one-week workshop on developing a graduate-level course on interdisciplinary modeling for aquatic ecosystems funded by the National Science Foundation. The workshop will feature graduate students and faculty from different disciplines, who will present or discuss issues associated with interdisciplinary water-related modeling.
