Carson City

Park goes to the dogs for Spring Fling K-9 Event

Pups will be prancing 8:30 a.m.Ð4 p.m. Saturday at Fuji Park as the Carson City 4 Paws 4-H Dog Club hosts the Spring Fling K-9 Event, a dog show and competition. It's free for spectators. The competition is open to the public; entrants need not be members of 4-H.

Event activities include conformation fun match, including a mixed-breed class; junior showmanship clinic and competition; adult showmanship competition; obedience; agility clinic and show 'n' go.

Entries prior to the day of the match are $5 per dog for the first class or clinic, and $3 for each additional class or clinic for the same dog. On the day of the match, entry fees are $6 and $5, respectively, and will be accepted from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Pancakes and second-hand goods for sale by men of Methodist church

The annual First United Methodist Men's Yard Sale is 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church, 412 W. Musser St.

The yard sale features a wide assortment of merchandise, including furniture and appliances, and the First United Methodist Church Youth Pancake Breakfast. Call 882-1436.

Volunteers needed to spend time with residents at convalescent center

Carson Convalescent Center thanks the many people who have donated their precious time by playing an instrument, talking to a resident, and making cupcakes for its monthly birthday parties. Thanks also go to people who have donated flowers and other items that are needed for center residents.

Virginia City

Warm up your taste buds at Chili on the Mountain

Award-winning chili cooks will compete for cash and bragging rights for the best chili and salsa at Virginia City's 23rd annual Chili on the Mountain Chili Cook-off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on C Street.

Cooking starts at 11 a.m. Tasting is at 12:30 p.m., while the supply lasts. Tasting kits including a napkin, spoon and cup costs $2.

First-, second- and third- place prize money will be awarded in several different categories.

The best cooks can expect to cash in on the $1,500 in prize money for Red ICS Chili and ICS Chili Verde Best Salsa, Best Booth and Best Non-ICS Chili. International Chili Society-sanctioned chili contains no beans. Non-ICS chili must contain beans. The winners of two district cook-offs will advance to the World Chili Cook- off in Reno in October.

Early entries may be done at the Chamber of Commerce in the Crystal Bar on the corner of C and Taylor streets or the morning of the event at the cook-off. Entry fees are $45 for red or $45 chili verde, $25 for salsa, or $100 for all three; it is $35 to enter the non-ICS contest. Cooks set up from 7-10 a.m. The cooks' meeting at 10:30 a.m.
