Carson City

Crafters wanted for Retired Telephone Pioneers fall sale

The Retired Telephone Pioneers still have a few spaces available for its parking lot sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 17. The sale is the primary fund-raiser for the year that helps fund the group's community projects.

The sale will be at St. Paul's Family Lutheran Church, 1201 S. Saliman Road.

Spaces will be 10 feet for $15, and only handmade crafts are welcome.

Call 841-2208 to request a signup form by Sept. 6.

Antiques appraised at Roberts House

Antique appraisals will be available at the Roberts House Museum from 2-4 p.m. Sunday for $5 per item. Appraisals will be held in the kitchen on a first-come basis.

Appraisals of firearms, swords and other military items will be available at a later date.

Galena

Learn how critters hide in plain sight

Children ages 7-12 can learn how animals use camouflage to protect themselves in the forest, often hiding in plain sight, during a free Junior Naturalist Program at 2 p.m. Saturday at Galena Creek Regional Park.

Meet at the Stone House Interpretive Center on the south side of the park. Bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen and water. Groups of five or more are asked to call ahead.

Junior Naturalist Programs are offered free of charge by the Washoe County Department of Regional Parks and Open Space. Galena Creek Regional Park is on Mount Rose Highway (State Route 431), about seven miles west of the intersection with Highway 395. The park features great hiking trials, summer campfire programs, Camp We Ch Me, a winter snow hill and cross-country skiing. For information, call 849-2511.

Fallon

A free outdoor, in-the-park, concert of Caribbean music

A free in-the-park concert of Caribbean music with the Queen of Haitian Song, Emeline Michel and her 11-piece band, Rasin Kreyol (Creole Roots), will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday at Oats Park in front of the Oats Park Art Center in Fallon.

Yerington

"Building from the Past" concert in Yerington

Bella Voce (women's vocal ensemble) and Mile High Jazz Band will present "Building from the Past" concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ginny Baker Theater in the Jeanne Dini Center in Yerington. The programs will include an exciting mix of jazz tunes by the Mile High Jazz Band, lead by pianist David Bugli and featuring vocalist Sheryl Adams, and choral selections by Bella Voce, directed by Jennifer Tibben-Lembke.

A highlight of the concert will be the new work "Building from the Past" by New York composer, Lisa DeSpain, written for big band and women's chorus.

It was inspired by the architectural and cultural heritage of historic performance spaces in Northern Nevada, including the theater in the building that had been Yerington Grammar School No. 9.

"Building from the Past," is a Continental Harmony project, a leadership initiative of the American Composers Forum and the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional funding provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Irvine Foundation, and Marshall Field's Project Imagine with support from the Target Foundation.
