Educational meeting for caregivers to focus on Alzheimer's

The Alzheimer's Association of Northern Nevada and the Douglas County Senior Center will sponsor an education meeting for family caregivers from 2-3 p.m. Thursday.

Guest speaker attorney Henry Cavallera will discuss legal and financial issues, long-term care planning and Medicaid planning.

The meeting is at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, and is free for anyone caring for a person affected by Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

Painters welcome at Brushes' meeting

The regular meeting of Carson Valley Desert Brushes will be held on 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1450 Stephanie Way in Minden.

Painters of all levels and those who would like to learn to paint are welcome.

Seminar to expose myths about vitamins

A free health seminar, "Buyer be wise: How to look for quality nutritional supplements," will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson's Take Five Restaurant, 1435 Highway 395, Gardnerville.

Discussed will be the myths versus the truth about vitamins and minerals and how standards of quality differ in the manufacturing process.

Spooner Lake

Run with your dog at annual lake race

The 10th annual Tahoe Trails and Tails is Aug. 21 at Spooner Lake State Park on Highway 38, just north of Highway 50.

There will be a 2-mile walk, a 5K run, a 10K mountain run and a one-half mile run for kids 10 and under. Participants will be running or walking with your dog, but that is not a requirement. All dogs that participate must be on a leash.

The race starts at 9:30 a.m., so plan on arriving at 8:30 a.m. for check-in or registration and pre-race treats.

Entry fee is $30 for those over 16 years of age, $20 for 16 years and under, $15 for 10 years and under (postmarked before Friday) or $35, $25 or $20 (after Friday and race day).

A family of four that preregisters will receive a special rate of $95. Entry fee includes custom-embroidered surprise piece of clothing (first 150 entries only) plus after-race barbecue served by Kozy's Kitchen (a $5 donation for non-racers), raffle prizes and more.

The event is sponsored by NUTRO and proceeds benefit Yerington Animal Protection Society of Yerington.
