Dayton basketball rolls in Sutro Classic

The Dayton High boys basketball team rolled to a 2-0 start in its own Sutro Classic with a 73-26 win over Bishop, Calif., on Friday. Dayton advanced to today's semifinals and with a win would advanced to the championship game to be held later today. Jordan Stokes scored 20 points and Erik Hopper added 13 points.

In other games, the Douglas JVs beat 53-43. Kyle Heidt scored 11 points for Douglas. Liberty of Las Vegas beat Fernley 68-44 and Silver Stage 65-30. Austin Chaney scored 15 points and Matt Zumoff added 12 points for Fernley while Jared Roberts scored seven points for Silver Stage.

In other scores, the Reno High JVs beat Battle Mountain 65-46 and North Tahoe 58-56 and North Tahoe defeated Battle Mountain 62-47.

OREM 64, GALENA 54

The Galena High boys basketball team looked like it was on its way to a win against the No. 1 ranked team in Utah, but a third quarter stretch proved to be the difference in Orem, Utah.

Only four players scored for Orem and two scored 58 of the 64 points. Chris Kusick scored 40 points and Emmitt Lamb added 18 points. In his 13 years at Galena, coach Tom Maurer said he believes the 40 points by Kusick is the most ever scored by a player against his team.

Still, Galena trailed just 31-29 at halftime and took a two-point lead early in the third quarter. "I thought we had them on the ropes," Maurer said.

But then Orem went on a run to take control of the game. "That's what killed us in the third quarter, knocked us out," Maurer said.

Maurer said the game reminded him of last year's NIAA 4A State semifinals against Bishop Gorman when the Grizzlies lost in a contest that took a similar pattern.

Luke Babbitt scored 25 points and Eric Maupin added 11 points for the Grizzlies. They were the only Galena players to score in double figures.

CLOVIS WEST 53, GALENA GIRLS 45

A night after beating four-time defending state champion Centennial, the Grizzlies fell to Central California power Clovis West in their own tournament. Clovis West led 10-3 after one quarter and 27-14 at halftime. The Grizzlies had only two field goals with the rest of their points coming from the foul line in the first half. Galena also committed 21 turnovers in the first half.

"The first quarter was really ugly," Galena coach Karen Friel said. "We didn't handl the pressure very well."

Caitlin Anderson scored nine points and Caitlin Crofts added nine points.

EDISON 70, DOUGLAS 40

Douglas continued its tough schedule at the Buchanan-Clovis West Tournament in Fresno, Calif., losing to the Central Section's No. 2 ranked team in Division I in Edison of Fresno. The Tigers have gone 1-2 in the event, also losing to Memorial of Fresno, ranked No. 19 in the nation.

Jeff Nady scored 13 points and Keith Olson added 10 points for Douglas. "A very athletic, quick group," said Douglas coach Rob Streeter about Edison. "We're getting exactly what we wanted to get.

"We've seen great competition. Our kids are are still competing. We're getting better. In the long it's definitely going to pay off."

Douglas will conclude play in the event today against Tulare Western.

CARSON JVS 45, FALLON 27

Will Holbert and Paul Cagle each scored 11 points, Caleb Carter scored 10 points, Mitch Brantingham had eighth points and Jeff Rispin added five points in the win for the Carson junior varsity boys basketball team at the Hug Tournament.

Markus Adams and Jordan Miller played well defensively and Drew Good played well at point guard for Carson, who continues play in the tournament at 10:30 a.m. against Fernley.

CARSON FROSH 59, DOUGLAS 41

Kyle Stone scored 16 points, Nick Peternell had 11 points, Wade Smith had nine points, Jeff Butler and Calvin Case each had seven points, Tyson Pontes had four points, John Nuthall had three points and Tom Purcell added two points in the win for the Carson freshmen boys basketball team at the Fallon Optimist Tournament.
