When you shoot 28 percent from the floor, turn the ball over 25 times and give up 17 offensive rebounds, you aren't going to win many basketball games.

Those were the key numbers in Carson's 48-31 loss to Reed in a nonleague girls game at Morse Burley Gymnasium Tuesday night.

The loss dropped Carson, which played without Nicole Scott, to 0-2 and Reed improved to 2-2.

Not surprisingly neither coach was happy with his team's performance after the game.

"We were more competitive in this game (than against Galena)," Carson's first-year coach Ric Garcia said. "We're still making a lot of dumb mistakes, and a lot of that has to do with maturity. In fact, until the end of the game, I thought we had a chance to win.

"It (no Nicole Scott) is pretty big. She plays good defense and can score 15 or 20 points a game."

That's because Reed, which was hurt by graduation, played a sloppy game, too. The Raiders also shot just 28 percent from the floor, and were impatient on offense against Carson's zone defense. Garcia rotated between a 2-3 and a 3-2, and the Raiders failed to make enough skip passes to be effective offensively.

"You could tell I wasn't happy," Reed coach Richard Shaw said. "He did a great job of mixing up his defense. We didn't come to play. That's what happens when you are a young basketball team. It was 1,2,3 and shoot."

Carson had sequences in the first half which enabled the Senators to stay close.

Reed led 8-5 with 4:23 left in the first quarter, but a 7-0 run gave the Raiders a 15-5 first-quarter lead. Jordan Rogers (16 points) started the surge with two free throws, Erica McKenzie sank a 3-pointer and Kayla Williams scored on a putback.

Carson stormed back, cutting the lead to 15-12 against Reed's second unit. Megan Kilty converted a three-point play, Sinead McSweeney converted a layup after a Reed turnover and Rosella Nunez scored.

Reed opened up a 22-14 lead, but a layup by Kilty and a putback by Catherine Brekken made it 22-18. Mary Sprinkel gave the Raiders some breathing room with a 3-pointer with 1:23 left.

"The first half I thought we handled the press well," Garcia said. "We just had trouble getting into our offense. They overplay on defense, and we didn't take advantage of it."

The third quarter was one the Senators would just as soon forget. They were 1 for 8 from the floor and turned the ball over six times. Reed, despite shooting 1 for 13, increased its lead to 10, 31-21.

A 10-4 run in the first 2 minutes 40 seconds of the final quarter enabled Reed to increase its lead to 16, 41-25. Sprinkel had a 3-pointer and Karrie Quartz added a putback to spark the Raiders.

Kaitlin Burroughs scored seven points for Carson.

REED JV SQUADS WINS IN OT

Reed outscored Carson 9-4 in overtime to come away with a 52-47 victory, dropping the Senators to 0-2 in nonleague play.

Reed led 43-41 with 20 seconds left when Morgan Knuckolls, who finished with 13 points, caught a long pass from Brittany DeRosa and scored to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Christa Casci led Carson with 17 points and Kailey Taylor contributed six.
