Survivors remember Pearl Harbor attack

The Northern Nevada Chapter 1 of the Pearl Harbor Survivors will meet at 9:30 a.m. today at Grandma Hattie's, 2811 S. Carson St.

This 64th anniversary of the attack will be to pay tribute to all who perished on that day of infamy as well as those survivors who since died.

Gov. Kenny Guinn has proclaimed Dec. 7 be observed as Pearl Harbor Day in Nevada. The meeting will open at 10 a.m. to coincide with the time of the attack. The meeting is open to the public. For information, call 883-1842.

Appeal seeks holiday memories from our readers

The Nevada Appeal wants you to write about your favorite holiday memory and send it in by Friday.

For the ninth year, we are asking readers to write about that special gift, unexpected visit, memorable act of kindness or holiday season spent far from home - the one-of-a-kind moments that are both personal and universal.

E-mail them to editor@nevadaappeal.com with "Holiday Memory" in the subject name, or fax to 887-2430. They may also be sent via the U.S. postal service to "Holiday Memory," Nevada Appeal, 580 Mallory Way, Carson City, NV, 89701, or dropped off.

We will publish as many of the stories as we can in the days before Christmas. Stories should be true, typed if possible, and no longer than 500 words. Include your name, hometown, phone number, a one-sentence biography and a photo of yourself or one that illustrates the memory.

Basque book signing set for Thursday

The Nevada State Museum will host a free holiday book signing event from 5:30- 7 p.m. Thursday in the Museum Store.

Local Basque authors will be on hand to sell and sign copies of their books and a sampling of Basque recipes will be served.

Participating authors will include Mary Ancho Davis, with her memoir and cookbook "Chorizos in an Iron Skillet: Memories and Recipes from an American Basque Daughter," J. Mallea Olaetxe with his book documenting tree carvings "Speaking Through the Aspens: Basque Tree Carvings in Nevada and California," Sandra Ott with her book about a Basque shepherding community "The Circle of Mountains," Carmel Urza author of, "Solitude," and Monique Urza Laxalt with her story of Basque girlhood "The Deep Blue Memory."

In addition to the wide selection of books about Nevada the museum store carries many unique Nevada related gift items including jewelry, coins, fine art prints and children's books and games.

Senior-living program to be discussed

Mary Stewart, psychologist with the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, will speak to seniors on the benefits of the institution's Senior Structured Living Program, "True Grit" from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the Carson Senior Citizens Center's Zephyr Room.

The program participants currently make arts and crafts items which they donate to outside charitable organizations.

Shrine Club celebrates Christmas

The annual Christmas party for the Carson Valley Shrine Club will be Thursday at Topaz Lodge.
