The Carson High girls basketball team lost 61-25 to one of the San Diego area's top teams in Mt. Carmel at the Above the Rim Classic on Thursday.

"They had size, speed, they could shoot from outside," Carson assistant coach Ron Tamori said. "Again we had too many turnovers and not enough shots go in."

Tamori also said Mt. Carmel dominated the boards and handled Carson's pressure. Kaitlin Burroughs scored 10 points, Rosella Nunez had six points and Sinead McSweeney added four points for Carson.

Nicole Scott, seeing her first week of action coming back from an injury, played about three-fourths of the game. Scott, still trying to get back into game shape, scored two points.

Carson concludes play in the tournament today against another one of the San Diego area's top teams in El Camino.

GALENA BOYS 59, MCQUEEN 43

The Galena High boys basketball team built a 30-point lead in an impressive effort on the road to go 2-0 in the High Desert League. McQueen cut into the deficit late during garbage time.

The late run left Galena coach Tom Maurer not completely satisfied. "I've never walked out of McQueen very happy, probably not happy today," Maurer said.

But other than the late surge by McQueen, Maurer had no complaints about his team's effort as it still held the Lancers under his goal of 45 points. Galena held McQueen to 26 points through three quarters.

"If we're under 45, we stand good," Maurer said. "I always trust defense. I think we played great defense."

Galena was also able to hold Nevada-bound Matt LaGrone scoreless. A frustrated LaGrone fouled out early in the third quarter. Maurer said credited holding LaGrone scoreless to a solid team effort.

"Any time you get a Division I player out and with no points, you stand a good chance of winning," Maurer said. "I think we did an exceptional job of getting him out."

Maurer also credited J.D. Peters with containing one of McQueen's other leading scorers. "J.D. Peters did a phenomenal job," said Maurer, who also praised Eric Bischoff's and Eric Maupin's defensive effort.

Luke Babbitt scored 16 points, Tristan Hill had 15 points, Justin Norvick had seven points and Brice Crook added six points for Galena.

DOUGLAS BOYS 68, DAMONTE RANCH 43

The Douglas High boys basketball team (5-6) led throughout as it won its Sierra League opener at Damonte. Ten of the Tigers' 12 players scored, with the Tigers' sophomores accounting for 39 points.

"To be 1-0 is the only record that really matters right now," said Douglas coach Rob Streeter about winning the league opener.

"It was a good effort. Our kids played hard. It was probably the best team effort we've had this year."

Sophomore Kevin Emm led the Tigers' balanced attack with 12 points, sophomore Jordan Hadlock had 11 points, Keith Olson had nine points and sophomores Jeff Nady and David Laird and James Vacek all added eight points.

GALENA GIRLS 51, MCQUEEN 39

Caitlin Crofts scored 18 points and Caitlin Anderson added 15 points as the Galena girls basketball team improved to 2-0 in the High Desert League.
