A Carson City murder suspect was picked up on a federal warrant by United States agents Wednesday morning in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Maximilliano Cisneros, 22, a U.S. citizen, arrived in Los Angeles about 3 p.m. and was booked into a jail there on the warrant for open murder and attempted murder.
He has been the focus of a manhunt since the May 26 shooting death of Juan Carlos Alegria, 23, and attempted murder of Fidel Fuentes, 22.
Witnesses state Alegria was standing by while Fuentes attempted to get into his estranged girlfriend's apartment after allegedly spotting Cisneros inside. According to court documents, after Fuentes kicked in the door, Cisneros allegedly emerged and opened fire, hitting Alegria three times in the torso and Fuentes once in the leg.
District Attorney Noel Waters said in order for American agents to enter Mexico and apprehend Cisneros, an agreement had to be signed between the two countries stating the U.S. was not seeking the death penalty or life without parole. The signing of the agreement wasn't a compromise because the charges against Cisneros don't qualify for either sentence, he said.
"We didn't think they were looking for him over in Mexico. We couldn't believe they got him," said Alegria's sister Alba. "This time I cried for happiness. I'm am glad. Now we're just going to wait and see what happens."
