It's always good news to local contractors when a vacant building is grabbed up by an internationally known company.

Source Interlink Companies recently opened a new magazine and book distribution center at 2025 Kansas St. in Carson City, inside the old Huck Fixtures building.

Mark Beauchamp, a co-owner of Shaheen Beauchamp Builders, said Wednesday that this business relocation is good for Carson City after Huck Fixtures closed about two years ago.

"It was a big unsightly vacant building and now at least there is a business in there employing people," he said.

Shaheen Beauchamp Builders renovated the space for Source Interlink. The project included building the loading docks and office space and cleaning the site.

Martha White, Source Interlink senior director of human resources, said that books and periodicals will come through the Carson City distribution center and then be shipped all over the West.

The Florida-based company employs 65 in the Carson City center, which opened in late 2004. Source Interlink is occupying about 50,000 square feet of the 100,000-square-foot building.

"We provide a distribution center for various retailers, our largest retailers are Barnes and Noble, Walden Books and Borders," she said.

Source Interlink Companies is the largest direct-to-retail magazine distribution and fulfillment company in North America. It's listed on the Nasdaq network as SORC. Source Interlink posted a 2004 third quarter revenue of $96 million.
