Hearing delayed for Sparks woman accused of killing husband in Fallon

FALLON - A preliminary hearing for a Sparks woman accused of killing her husband while the couple was in Fallon was delayed Thursday for two weeks.

Defense attorney Paul Drakulich, who represents Devonya Sasha Camara, asked for the postponement, saying he needs more time to prepare for the hearing. She is charged with shooting David Camara once in the chest with a 9 mm Glock after the two stopped along Highway 50 in the early morning hours of Jan. 30.

A preliminary hearing gives the Churchill County District Attorney's Office a chance to present evidence that led to charges being filed against a suspect. The justice of the peace determines if there is enough evidence to send the defendant to district court to enter a plea.

"Even in two weeks, it might not be appropriate to go forward at that time," Drakulich told Justice of the Peace Daniel Ward. "I want to handle this in a way that keeps it moving forward but will leave no stone unturned."

Devonya, 29, waived her right to a preliminary hearing within 15 days.

Drakulich said he not only needs to interview eyewitnesses to the crime, but "other witnesses to other things that went on in the relationship."

Two friends of the couple allegedly saw the shooting. Police said David Camara called a friend in a separate vehicle to ask for help, saying his wife was out of control. He had stopped alongside the road while returning home to Sparks.

David Camara, 33, had just finished a show with his band at Jive-n-Java in Fallon.

The friends stopped behind the Camara car, police said, and heard the couple arguing. Devonya Camara is accused of grabbing the gun from under the driver's seat and shooting her husband. He died at the scene.

Churchill County Sheriff Richard Ingram said at the time the suspect didn't give any reason for shooting her spouse, and that there was no evidence that David Camara had physically harmed his wife immediately before he was killed.

According to documents filed in Churchill County Justice Court, when deputies arrived at the shooting scene, Devonya Camara reportedly told police, " It's my fault. I shot him. Take me to jail." She had blood on her clothes, face and hands, the report states, and deputies recovered a 9mm Glock handgun and spent casing.

Ingram said the weapon belonged to David Camara.

Devonya Camara is being held in the Churchill County Jail on a murder charge. Her bail remains at $500,000 cash only.
