System expected to bring snow to Sierra

A low-pressure system sitting 600 miles off in the Pacific Ocean will bring scattered snow showers to the Lake Tahoe Basin long before it comes to shore.

"The pattern isn't going to change. It will maintain itself throughout most of the week," said Rudy Cruz, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

What the basin will see is high clouds that will bring with them an occasional snow shower today, Wednesday and Thursday. The maximum accumulation of snow will be 1 to 3 inches at lake level and 3 to 5 inches above 7,000 feet.

The weather system is expected to break apart by the time it hits the Pacific coast, possibly on Thursday, Cruz said.

"We really don't expect too much of a difference" as it comes on shore, he said.

Daytime highs will be in the upper 30s to low 40s at lake level and mid-30s above 7,000 feet. In the Carson Valley, the highs will be mid-40s to lower 50s.

Wind gusts between 10 to 20 mph will keep fog from accumulating in the Carson Valley, a problem that has plagued much of the weather patterns in the region for the past month.
