Larry McPherson has been a member of the National Pony Express Association Nevada Division for seven years. He was elected vice president and served that position for one year until taking over the vacant position of president.

He was elected president in September for a two-year term. As president, his duties include presiding at monthly meetings, representing Nevada at the National Convention each year; providing reports on membership and finances to the National Board; getting information to the members in a regular newsletter; presenting pins to participants in each year's re-ride; and being on call for any request to speak on the history of the Pony Express and give demonstrations of the mail exchange.

The Pony Express re-ride is scheduled to be in Carson City at 11:15 a.m. at the corner of Third and South Curry streets on June 21.

What is the purpose of the Express Association?

The association is an organization dedicated to educating the public about the Pony Express and the important role it played in the history of the West. Some of the ways this is accomplished is:

1) by preserving and marking the original route through the states from Missouri to California;

2) by re-enacting the ride each year using riders to carry the mochilla over the 1,966-mile trail (the mochilla contains commemorative letters that can be purchased for $5, the original cost of sending a letter by Pony Express);

3) by participating in national and local celebrations to bring awareness to communities; and

4) by giving presentations and demonstrations to interested groups.

How many members do you have?

The Nevada Division has 155 members, including associate members.

How many riders does it take to cross the state of Nevada for the re-ride?

The 420 miles in Nevada are covered by 130 to 140 riders.

What is the cost to the Nevada participants?

Costs vary. Riders pay for everything they need, which includes food, transportation for themselves and their horses, time that may need to be taken off from work, and special clothing items. I would estimate the cost to an individual to be between $200 and $500.

How long has the association been in existence?

The National Pony Express Association was formed in 1978 and there are still a few charter members alive and active today.

Why is it important to continue this tradition?

Every nation needs to be aware of and proud of its history. The Pony Express was a vital part of the growth of the western states in the 19th century. It was a shining example of the ingenuity, determination and courage that built our country. The association works to keep the legend and its spirit alive in today's world.

How does a person become a member of the Nevada Chapter so they can participate in the re-ride?

A person who wishes to be a member of the Nevada Division of the National Pony Express Association must be at least 14 years of age. The person must fill out an application form (those from 14 to 17 years old need to have permission of a parent or guardian) and submit it during the period of Jan. 1 to March 1 in order to be considered as a rider for that year.

Dues are $30 per year for an individual with a special family rate. The Board of Directors determines who will participate in the re-ride. Determination is based in part on the physical condition of the rider and horse. We also have associate membership available for $25 yearly dues. An associate member may not vote or participate in the re-ride.
