Sunday morning: Carson high class officers announced

The votes are in. In early January, Carson High School students listened to short speeches from students running for office. The elected officers represent their classes from January of this year through December 2005.

For the student body, Gary Groth, president; Chris Earwood, vice president; Sophia Raphael, secretary; Ryan Zaro, treasurer; Jennifer Faiella, historian; Shannan Eng, school board representative and Elia Bell, public relations officer.

For senior class officers: Molly Fronapfel, president; Jack Maloney, vice president; Amanda Barnes, secretary; Kendra Jones, treasurer; and Jessica Chizanowski and Jessica Morgan, representatives.

The junior class officers are: Joseph Leatham, president; Shepard Darquea, vice president; Whitney Hoote, secretary; Anna Macquarie, treasurer; and Kim Stefonowicz and Bryt Lewis, representatives.

For the sophomore class, the officers are: Tommy Dudley, president; Katie Paul, vice president; Nicole Carlevato, secretary; Kately Francoeur, treasurer; and Alejandra Melgarejo and Carrie Linn, representatives.

Pat Wiggins, animal control supervisor at the Carson City Animal Shelter, called Tuesday to say that a dog taken to the shelter recently at the same time as a bassett-hound mix who had parvo, does not have the viral disease.

He said although the two dogs had contact with each other, the basset-hound, picked up as a stray, likely did not have vaccinations protecting him from parvo.

The chocolate Labrador, who has since received an additional vaccination likely was given the shots when younger, he said. The shelter looks forward to finding the Lab a new home.

The shelter is at 3770 Butti Way, off North Edmonds, and is open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call 887-2171.

The Carson Sertoma's National Heritage Essay Contest is under way. Fifth-grade students in Carson City schools who want to participate should ask their teachers for more information. The topic of this year's essay,"I am an American," asks essayists to focus on the rights, privileges and freedoms of Americans. Essays, from one to four minutes in length, are due by Feb. 4 to teachers. An award dinner is scheduled for March 8 at Thurman's Ranch House.
