Locals to play at DII school

Two local athletes have accepted scholarships to play baseball and softball at Kentucky Wesleyan, an NCAA DIvision II school, next season.

Neil Holmes, a 2003 Carson High graduate who has played the last two seasons at Yuba (Calif.) Community College, has accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Kentucky Wesleyan where he'll be a junior. Dayton High's Nicole Greer will also play softball at the school next year where she will enroll as a freshman.

Greer will sign with the school on Saturday while Holmes will sign with the school, which competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, within the next week.

Holmes started at shortstop as a freshman at Yuba and started this past season in center field. He hit .295 as a freshman and .322 this past season. He was recruited by Kentucky Wesleyan as a shortstop.

Greer was recruited as a pitcher. This past season for Dayton, Greer had a strikeout to walk ratio of 143-12 over 127.1 innings with a 10-10 record and a 2.47 earned run average. She also hit .371 with a .500 on base percentage, .532 slugging percentage, eight doubles, one triple and a team-high 13 RBI.

In Northern 3A play, Greer pitched 94 of 100 innings with 111 strikouts and nine walks. She had a 2.61 E.R.A. and held opponents to a .184 average. She also hit .366 with a .509 on base percentage, .585 slugging percentage, seven doubles and one triple.
