Deputies investigating 'suspicious' vandalism at area pharmacies

The third act of pharmacy-targeted vandalism in as many weeks has the Carson City Sheriff's Department investigating what might be a string of failed burglary attempts aimed at acquiring controlled substances.

The latest target, Med Care Pharmacy on North Carson Street, was hit late Wednesday night.

The right front door was shattered but nothing appeared to be missing and there were no known suspects.

On July 15, Mike's Pharmacy on North Curry Street was damaged when someone used a boulder to break a window. It was the second such attempt there.

Owner Mike Hautekeet said the pharmacy had seen the work of vandalism before but that the most recent acts appeared to be deliberate attempts to enter the business, possibly thwarted by his alarm system.

The incidents come on the heels of at least a dozen Reno-area pharmacy break-ins since April.

"Right now we don't know if they are related," said Sgt. Bob White of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

"Nothing was taken from either pharmacy, but they do seem to be a little suspicious."

Anyone with information on any of the incidents is asked to call the Carson City Sheriff's Department's nonemergency dispatch at 887-2008.
