Black named to all-league second team

Carson High graduate Rodney Black was named to the all-Foothill Conference second team in baseball this past season for Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, Calif.


Black, a 2002 CHS graduate, has received a scholarship to play at NAIA Central Methodist University in Missouri where he will enroll as a junior.


This past season, Black hit .284 (31-for-109) with two home runs and 22 RBI. He was also hit by a pitch 23 times and had a .447 on base percentage. He had an outstanding defensive year as well, making just nine errors on the season as an infielder.


Nevada-San JoseSt. game to be on ABC


The University of Nevada football team will be featured on television by ABC this season.


The Nevada at San Jose State game on Oct. 1 will be one of two Western Athletic Conference games to be televised by ABC on a regional basis. The other will feature Fresno State at Hawai'i on Oct. 29.


Both games will be televised at 4 p.m.


The games will be shown to about 18 percent of the country in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and part of Idaho.


"We are pleased that ABC is giving us the opportunity for this exposure on the West Coast," WAC commissioner Karl Benson said.


"We hope this is just the beginning for regular appearances on ABC sports."


The games will be the first time that the WAC will be featured on ABC since 1998.


Coyotes Senior Babe Ruth wins big


Dominant pitching carried the Carson Coyotes Senior Babe Ruth baseball team to a 13-1 win over the Silver Springs Mariners on Wednesday.


Mike Handley struck out nine and walked one over three innings, and Dan Ford and Jason Alcasas each struck out three and walked none in one inning as the three Coyote pitchers combined to strike out the side in all five innings.


Adam Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI, Ford was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, Alcasas tripled, Derek Giurliani added a hit and Alex Tanchek was hit by a pitch three times and scored three runs. for the Coyotes.


The Coyotes will next play in a doubleheader on Sunday against the Reno White Sox.
