Carson City sheriff's deputies this afternoon took into custody a suspect in an attempted robbery of Wells Fargo Bank at 2424 S. Carson St.
A robot has removed a backpack, believed to have a bomb inside, from the bank. The status of the backpack is unknown; it was sitting in front of the bank as of 4 p.m.
The sheriff's department removed wires from the suspect's clothing.
Traffic was blocked in north and southbound directions on South Carson Street from Koontz Lane to Fairview Drive.
Deputies had kept the suspect lying at gunpoint in front of the bank for much of the afternoon while the Tahoe-Douglas Bomb Squad inspected the building. The man was wearing a hat, jacket, sunglasses and sneakers. He has not yet been identified.
Officials said a bank robbery attempt about 1 p.m. was thwarted by an off-duty Douglas County deputy who apprehended the man.
Bank employees were evacuated and traffic rerouted shortly afterward.
