Mike Teixeira took a perfect game into the fifth inning and settled for a one-hitter as the Carson high baseball team opened Sierra League play with a 14-0 win at Hug on Thursday.
Kevin Schlange also had a huge day for Carson, belting two three-run home runs and finishing with seven RBI. Logan Parsley and Alex Tanchek also homers as well for the Senators.
It was the first time since 2002 that Hug was able to field a baseball team. "It was just good to see them have a team," Carson coach Steve Cook said. "They have a long ways to go. We were happy to have them back."
Teixeira recorded 11 of his 15 outs by strikeouts in the game that was called after five innings.
Schlange and Parsley hit back-to-back homers in the third inning with Parsley following Schlange's three-run shot with a solo shot. Tanchek hit a two-run shot and Derek Shoaf and Jason Knowles each added two hits.
"Tex controlled the game for us on the mound," Cook said. "Everybody contributed. It was a good team win."
GALENA 10, MANOGUE 5
Andrew Ferguson pitched a complete game and also went 3-for-4 to lead the Grizzlies to the win in their High Desert League opener. Galena scored four runs in the third to take an 8-2 lead with J.D. Peters providing the big hit, a three-run double. Basim Azzam also went 2-for-4 for the Grizzlies.
DAYTON 8, WHITTELL 4
Travis Wood struck out 13 and didn't walk a batter in picking up the complete game win in the nonleague game for the Dust Devils. Wood also hit a two-run home run in the third that capped a four-run rally to give Dayton a 4-2 lead. Tom O'Brien went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI for the Dust Devils.
