Catholic school accepts applications

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School is accepting applications for the 2005-06 school year. The school is in its 48th year and offers faith-based Catholic education, a science and computer lab, extracurricular activities, student council, newspaper, yearbook, sports, all-day kindergarten through eighth grade, some tuition assistance, free morning supervision beginning at 7:30 a.m. and extended daycare from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada's seventh annual Jester's Jog Family Fun Run is April 9.

Register before Saturday and save. Children 12 and under are $10, for older than 12 years, registration is $25 if postmarked by Saturday, or $30 thereafter.

Race-day sign in is at 8 a.m. Race begins at 9 a.m. at the Piñon Plaza Resort Casino.

Care Flight presentation for SIERA breakfast

SIERA will hold a social breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at Grandma Hattie's. Following the breakfast, members will participate in a presentation of the Care Flight Critical Care Transport Helicopter.

4-H collects canned foods until Friday

Cooperative Extension's 4-H Council in Douglas County is holding a canned food drive to help the Carson Valley Food Closet. Bring nonperishable food to the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office in Gardnerville, 1329 Waterloo Lane, by Friday to contribute. You can also give the items to a 4-H member in your neighborhood. Call 782-9960.

Study to earn a ham radio license

Classes begin at 6:30 p.m. March 29 for earning a ham radio license. Classes run for eight Tuesdays, ending May 18, followed by the FCC exam on May 21. Animal Ark season opens next month

Animal Ark reopens April 1.

To have a wild experience with nature, visit Animal Ark, a sanctuary for life committed to sheltering non-releasable wildlife. You will see bears, tigers, foxes, a mountain lion and a snow leopard, to name just a few species.

Docents will answer questions and teach the kids about the wildlife.

Hours are 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. General admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Take Highway 395 North past Reno, turn right on Red Rock, go 11.5 miles to Deerlodge Road, and turn right. Call (775) 970-3111.

Teaching award nominations sought

Nominations for the 2005 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are due to the Nevada Department of Education by May.

Principals, teachers, students and parents can nominate teachers for the award. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
