Carson swim teams sweep Douglas

The Carson High boys and girls swim teams had many impressive efforts in sweeping past Douglas High on Saturday.


Carson won the girls meet 188-120 while the Senators won the boys meet 173-104. For the girls, Carson's team of Sarah Metcalf, Hilary Schlager, Jessica Goddard and Katie Wandel won the 200-yard medley relay in two minutes, 2.53 seconds.


The Senators also swept the top four places in the 200 free with Schlager (2:03.44), Barbara Perkins taking second, Melanie Gingell placing third and Megan Hanke taking fourth.


Carson also went one-two-three in the 200 individual medley with Jamie Engan (2:19.44), Lauren Metcalf (2:23.04) and Danielle Judge taking third. Wandel also swept the 50 and 100 freestyles, winning the 50 in 27.10 and the 100 in 59.19. Sarah Metcalf took second in the 100 free in 1:00.76.


In addition, the Senators went one-two-three in the 500 free with Engan (5:22.69), Lauren Metcalf (5:23.88) and Rebekah Niehoff taking third.


The most exciting race of the day came in the 100 breaststroke as the Tigers' Jesse Bench won in 1:14.49, edging out Schlager, who took second in 1:14.68. Other winners for Douglas were Katie O'Neal in the 100 backstroke (1:09.64), Josefina Figala in the 100 butterfly (1:05.15) and Ashton Leuthmer in diving.


Carson swept the relays as Engan, Lauren Metcalf, Schlager and Rebekah Niehoff won the 400 free relay in 3:59.29 and Wandel, Engan, Goddard and Niehoff won the 200 free relay in 1:49.29. The Senators also took second in the 200 free relay.


For the boys, Carson went one-two in the 200 medley relay. John Wandel, Matt Grunert, Australian foreign exchange student Sam Forbes and Andrew Cardinal won in 1:50.84. Alex Updegrove, Garrett Clayton, Sam Ballard and Aaron Murakami took second.


Cardinal won the 200 free in 2:01.48. For Douglas, Trevor Schaff won the 200 I.M. in 2:12.06 and Justin White won the 50 free in 23.62. White also won the 100 free in 52.56.


Forbes won the 100 fly in 1:01.37 and Ballard took second. In the 500 free, Wandel won in 5:27.00 and Ian Murdock was second in 5:31.03. Douglas won the 200 free relay while Carson took second and third.


The Senators went one-two-three in the 100 back with Wandel (1:00.78), Updegrove taking second and Ballard placing third. Grunert won the 100 breaststroke while Schaff took second. Wandel, Grunert, Forbes and Cardinal won the 400 free relay in 3:33.87. The diving event was won by the Tigers' James Barnard.
