Talks for prospective nursing and surgical technology students

Dr. Judith Cordia, director of Allied Health programs at Western Nevada Community College, will speak to prospective nursing and surgical technology students at information nights today and Wednesday at the Carson City campus. The sessions will provide information about WNCC allied health programs, licensing and employment opportunities.

The nursing information session is 5-6 p.m. today in Room 221 of the Cedar Building, 2201 W. College Parkway. Dr. Cordia will discuss the college's associate degree nursing program, preparation for admissions and transferability of course and credits.

The information night for students interested in WNCC's surgical technology certificate of achievement program is 5-6 p.m. Wednesday in Cedar 221. For information, call 445-3296.

Donations wanted to support breast cancer walk

Dorinne Linn of Carson City is seeking donations to participate in the three-day, 60-mile walk (20 miles each day) for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in San Diego on Oct. 14-16.

Linn said she wants to walk the 60 miles for the people of Carson City. She needs to raise $2,100 to walk and is looking for donations from businesses and individuals. She will place names of donors on a T-shirt for the walk.

She has started a team for the walk, "Team Carson City." If others would like to join her, they can go to www.the3-day.org and click on Join a Team.

According to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Web site, www.komen.org, funds raised by all of the Breast Cancer 3-Day events will be combined, with the majority of the net proceeds supporting international breast cancer research. Remaining funds (up to 25 percent) will be provided to local communities to complement funding in each area for breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs.

Supply of O negative blood at critical levels

United Blood Services is asking the community to come together during spring break to donate blood.

Community blood donations are extremely low, and the bank asking for help over the accident-prone holiday. The supply of O negative is at critical levels and leaves the community with only a one-day supply. O negative is the universal blood type and the first type used in trauma cases and emergency situations.

Republican Central Committee meeting Thursday

The Carson City Republican Central Committee's monthly meeting is at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the Plaza Hotel, 801 S. Carson St. Sen. Bob Beers will be the speaker.

Learn co-parenting through and after a divorce

The Ron Woods Center will present the class "Co-parenting Through and After a Divorce," beginning April 6. The class runs Wednesdays for eight weeks from 6-7:30 p.m. and costs $65, which includes a work book.

The class educates parents regarding the effect parental conflict on their children's development; helps parents identify their contribution to conflict while increasing impulse control; teaches parents anger management, communication and conflict resolution skills; and increases the likelihood of keeping both parents active in a child's life.
