Local event planned for National Day of Prayer

President Harry S. Truman in 1952 signed into law a National Day of Prayer as an annual event.

Celebrated in all 50 states of the nation, the day offers an opportunity for communities to come together in prayer for themselves, military and government leaders on local, national and world levels.

The Rev. Patrick Propster from Calvary Chapel - Carson City, has organized this year's event for Carson City and surrounding communities to begin at 12:10 p.m. Thursday at the Capitol. The event will conclude at 12:50 p.m., offering those on their lunch hours time to get to and from their offices.

"We kept this in mind for those dedicating their lunch to this effort," Propster said.

Propster paraphrased a verse from Hebrews, 10:25, "Do not forsake the fellowship or the gathering together as some have done."

"We have the right to raise our arms to praise the Lord," he said. "To give up our lunch to praise God is a small fast we would be giving for the great grace He has given."

Greg Bortolin, Gov. Kenny Guinn's press secretary, said Guinn is planning on participating in National Day of Prayer activities.

In the past, many legislators have made time to participate, when scheduling allows.

Pastors who will pray for city, state and national governments are Chuck Nichter, John Wiltse and Alan Dorway. Mayor Marv Teixeira will read his own proclamation, and Sen. Mark Amodei will offer a special message. The Rev. Louie Locke Sr. will offer the closing prayer.

Mike Hurlbert, youth pastor of First Christian Church, has organized several musicians to present live music.

"We will also have several handouts," Propster said. "The first 100 people get a yellow magnet that reads 'Pray for our troops,' courtesy of ServiceFlags.com, and we'll have refreshments and Madeline's cookies, as well as bookmarks and stickers for everyone."

Propster said that by coming out publicly (to pray), it gives people of the community - with a diverse belief system - the opportunity to come to unity for a common cause.

"The Carson City Ministerial Fellowship invites everyone to come out for prayer. Bring your children and walk around the Capitol grounds. Meet legislators and be on the same grounds as our decision makers.

"With much blessings is great responsibility."
