Angler's Edge swims upstream

GARDNERVILLE - Angler's Edge owners Don and Liz Weirauch moved their flyfishing store to a fresh fishing hole this month, and they're finding it's more convenient for their customers.

Their new location, at 1506 Highway 395 in the old Lunar Embassy building, offers more space than the previous shop at 1420 Highway 395.

"If you want to try out a rod, you can step out on the grass and give it a flip," said Don.

Angler's Edge moved on May 2.

Don said Angler's Edge is the "only fly fishing store between Reno and Bridgeport, Calif. (on this side of the Sierra)."

Primarily a fly fishing store, Angler's Edge also carries spinning rods and lures and does repairs on rods and reels.

Don said the store has everything needed to get set up for fly fishing - plus.

"We keep an ear out. We know where the fish are biting and where they're not," he said.

Angler's Edge has been open for almost 11 years. The Weirauches purchased the store from Peter Bauer in December 2004.

Bauer still works at the store, as does another member of High Sierra Fly Casters, Burl Middendorf. High Sierra Fly Casters is an organization with approximately 140 members who are fly fishers from Northern Nevada and California.

The Weirauches are members, too.

"Our primary focus is catch-and-release fishing and preserving existing fisheries," said Don.

High Sierra Fly Casters meet at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. The group welcomes visitors and prospective new members.

Angler's Edge's hours have changed, adding Wednesdays during fishing season - spring through fall. During season, hours are weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"We go fishing on Sundays," said Liz.

Winter hours will be 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday, closed Wednesdays and Sundays.

Classes in rod building, tying and casting are offered periodically. Casting classes are held in the spring.
