More senior discounts and summer activities for children offered by readers

I want to thank all of my readers who e-mailed me with more ideas concerning senior discounts.

Here are just a few I received: Gottschalk's Department store gives a senior discount every Tuesday, and Grocery Outlet also gives a 10 percent discount every month on the third of each month and the third Thursday.

The Greenhouse Garden Center has every Monday set for senior workshops, which are also 10 percent off.

Now the perk on these stores is the senior age qualification for the discount is 55.

Speaking of great senior programs, the Meals on Wheels will be holding a very nice fund-raiser with a little help from "Ol' Blue Eyes." So come enjoy, "The Songs of Sinatra" performed by Frank Carabetta and his combo.

A few days ago, it was mentioned in the Appeal that Jim and Katie Bawden and John Serpa Sr. donated $10,000 to the Meals on Wheels Program.

I know that for some who participate in this program, it is more then a warm meal - it's companionship, just knowing someone cares. Thank you to Landmark Communities and John Serpa Sr. for such a gracious donation.

Today, you can go listen to a free musical tribute to our veterans and armed forces. This special event is very uplifting and a celebration to the many men and women who have fought for our freedom.

It will feature a wide variety of music for all ages from our local Capital City Community Band. Don't miss it.

Thank you to all of you who sent the following fun summer events coming up for the youth that I didn't mention. We have a entertaining Science Camp 2005 this summer at the Children's Museum with hands-on programs for children who can't get enough of science.

There will be three sessions, so you'll have plenty of opportunity to get your children enrolled.

If your child loves band, how about a band camp? Children need at least one year of experience to enroll.

There's jazz, small ensembles, group lessons and a theory class. The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department and Vivo Band Instrument Repair will sponsor the camp July 25-29 at the Community Center.

Cory King with the Carson City Library is teaming up with the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada in a fun collaboration with storyteller and folk-singer Adam Miller on Wednesday.

Children 7 and up are invited to check out the new show titled "Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds." It should be fun and will be held at the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Saturday, take pleasure in a relaxing jazzy day at the Greenhouse Garden Center. The Douglas High School Jazz Band will be playing while you enjoy shopping for your favorite plants and trees.

A portion of the sales will go to help the Douglas High School Band.
