Nevada has 20 hits in win

The University of Nevada (23-26, 12-14 in the Western Athletic Conference) pounded out 20 hits to snap a season high five-game losing streak, downing SJSU (27-25-1, 12-14 WAC) 11-3 Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

After stranding five runners in the first and second innings the Pack scored four runs in the top of the third to go in front for good at 4-0. Nevada got two-out hits from second Bub Madrid who drove home the first two runs of the game while Eric Newman and Robert Marcial each drove in one run in the inning.

San Jose got single runs in the third and fourth to close within two at 4-2. Ryan Angel singled in the run in the third and Nate Corrick plated the run in the fourth with his RBI single.

Ben Mummy's RBI double in the top of the six scored the Pack's fifth run of the game and Nevada broke the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh. Jesse Oliver's single accounted for the first two RBI of his career to get the scoring started. Jacob Butler and Shawn Scobee each hit two-run homers making the score 11-2.

San Jose added a single run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 11-3. Angel drove in his second run with his second single of the game.

Starter Ryan Rodriguez won his 10th game of the season allowing three runs on nine hits and struck out five in 7.2 innings on the mound. The 10 wins moved him into a tie for seventh on the single season Nevada victories list. San Jose starter Brandon Dewing (6-5) was tagged with the loss allowing four runs on eight hits in three innings on the mound.

Newman was5-for-5 at the plate to lead the Pack. The five hits is the most by any Nevada hitter in a game this season. Mummy started the game 4-for-4 before grounding out in his final at bat. Butler had three hits and belted his 11th home run of the season and 39th of his career which moved him into a tie for third place on the career list with current Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Lyle Overbay.

Madrid and Marcial added two hits apiece to the attack. Scobee's team leading 16th home run moved him into a tie with Butler for the sixth best season at Nevada. Butler's 16 home run season came last year. Fresman Matt Bowman of Dayton went 1-for-3.

For San Jose Anthony Contreras, Corrick, and Angelhad two hits each. Contreras extended his hit streak to 28 games. The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.
