Hayes and Butler are honored

As expected, Nevada catcher Brett Hayes was named the all-Western Athletic Conference catcher by league coaches for the third straight year.

Hayes, who suffered a hairline crack in his left thumb on Saturday, hit .313 this season. It was his lowest average of his three-year Nevada career. Hayes is expected to be drafted high enough in the upcoming draft that he will sign a professional contract.

Outfielder Jacob Butler also was a first-team selection after hitting a team-leading .333 with 11 homers.

Ben Mummy, who hit .297 with 18 homers, was a second-team selection at first base. He was joined on the second team by teammates Bub Madrid (second base) .250 and sophomore pitcher Ryan Rodriguez, who was 11-5 with a 5.67 ERA.

Rice and Fresno State shared the major awards.

Rice freshman Joe Savery hit .387 overall and was 5-2 as a pitcher in conference action with a 2.49 ERA as the Player of the Year. Rice's Wayne Graham was named Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career after leading the Owls to a 41-17 record.

Fresno State junior Matt Garza was 6-5 with a 3.05 ERA as the Pitcher of the Year. He averaged nearly a strikeout per inning pitched. Beau Mills was named the top freshman after hitting .319 with 22 homers and 63 RBI this season.

PACK DUO HONORED

Nevada's Mummy and Rodriguez were honored as the WAC's Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Mummy went 4 for 12 in last weekend's sweep of Fresno State. He hit three homers, scored five times and drove in seven runs. He opened the weekend with a walk-off homer off Rudy Quinonez, and on Sunday, he went 2 for 4 with two homers and five RBI in the Pack's 20-7 victory. It was his third WAC honor in his three-year career.

Rodriguez pitched his first complete game of the season, scattering six hits and walking two. At one point, he retired 11 straight hitters. It is the third time he's been honored by the WAC, but it's the first time this year a Nevada pitcher has been recognized by the conference.

NEVADA MEN FINISH 4-1

The Nevada men's basketball team concluded its tour of Italy with a 122-108 win over Prima Veroli Saturday night.

Nevada finished the tour with four straight wins after losing its opening game.

Nick Fazekas led the Pack with 30 points and eight rebounds and Jermaine Washington added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mo Charlo and Marcelus Kemp scored 17 points apiece, and Ramon Sessions and Kyle Shiloh added 11 each.

RICE WINS CUP AGAIN

Rice won the annual Western Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup for the second straight season.

Rice, thanks to titles in men's cross country, baseball and women's basketball, finished with 101 points. The Owls also took second in women's cross country, women's soccer, women's indoor and outdoor track.

Fresno State, which grabbed titles in women's tennis and softball, finished second with 92 points. The FSU men were second in outdoor track and field.

SMU was third (75.5), UTEP fourth (74) and Boise State (67.5) rounded out the top five. Nevada finished eighth with 61.5.
