Storage unit project in Dayton gets go-ahead

DAYTON - Phil Cowee will finally get his storage units.

Lyon County commissioners on Thursday approved a development proposed by the Dayton resident including storage units, a watchman's quarters, an office building and a restaurant along the Carson River just off Dayton Valley Road.

Cowee has overcome the opposition of some members of the Dayton Regional Advisory Committee, which rejected the plan in July, then tied 2-2 on a vote in October.

"Obviously I'm very happy," Cowee said. "It was a pretty long process and it's nice to finally get the approval and finally be able to move forward."

The Lyon County Planning Commission approved the development on a 5-1 vote with one abstention.

Commission Chairman Bob Milz said Cowee worked with the members of the Dayton committee to allay some of their concerns.

He praised Cowee for redesigning the development to increase landscaping and add public access to the river.

The development will contain 86,000 square feet of storage units and 36,000 square feet of commercial space. Cowee said he decreased the amount of storage, increased the commercial project and provided access to the river in order to win approval.

Storage units will not be visible from Dayton Valley Road.
