Jazz vocalist to play BAC on Friday

Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers will appear at the Brewery Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Internationally recognized as The Queen of Classic Jazz and Blues in the authentic style of the 1940s and 1950s, Lavay Smith is the real deal. Smith is backed up by her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, an all-star eight-piece band consisting of trumpet, trombone, alto sax, tenor sax, piano, bass and drums.

Tickets are $25 general; $22 BAC members, seniors and students

Democratic women to meet at Hattie's

The Carson City Democratic Women meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant.

Guest speaker will be Lora Miles, attorney at law with the RSVP Elder Care Law Program.

The program donates legal services to seniors. All Democrats are welcome.

Learn how to build with gingerbread

The Carson Valley Arts Council will host a demonstration on the techniques used to construct gingerbread houses from 2-4 p.m. Saturday.

Interested parties are invited to stop by the Artistic Viewpoints Gallery, 1368 U.S. Highway 395, B, Gardnerville, across the street from Raley's. An exhibit of gingerbread houses in various phases of construction will be presented including discussion and recommendations for novices interested in becoming involved in this classic holiday tradition.

Applications for participation in the CVAC Gingerbread House Decorating Contest may also be picked up at the Artistic Viewpoints Gallery, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Contact 267-5634 or DRL1953@aol.com.

Authors' signing celebrates birthday of Mark Twain

In honor of Mark Twain's 170th birthday the Territorial Enterprise Museum will hold an author's reception and book-signing from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Territorial Enterprise building, 47-53 South C St. in Virginia City.

Mark Twain impersonator McAvoy Lane will present "The Ghost of Mark Twain."
