Blood donations needed for holidays

The blood you donate now will save the lives of patients who are in the hospital or receiving medical treatments over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. To make an appointment, call United Blood Services at 887-9111. You will receive a free half-gallon of Model Dairy Ice cream.

Elks hosting Bunco and Taco Party today

The Carson City Emblem Club No. 507's Bunco and Taco Party will be today at the Elks Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St. Tacos will be served at 6 p.m. for $6; Bunco at 7 p.m. is $5. The public is invited.

Brass Factors to play BAC

The Brewery Arts Center presents Brass Factors at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the BAC Performance Hall.

The Reno brass quartet will take its audience on a virtual musical history tour, playing classical, popular, jazz, religious and modern music and emphasizing the contrasts in musical styles over many hundreds of years.

Tickets are $15 general and $12 BAC members, seniors and students Call 883-1976 for tickets.

Comstock Mobile Village craft fair is Saturday

Comstock Mobile Village will hold its annual Craft and Jewelry Faire from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Comstock Mobile Village is at 2601 E. College Parkway, across from the airport. Free coffee will be available.

Food distribution a week early due to holiday

The USDA Commodity Food distribution will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. Please note that this is a week earlier than normal due to the Thanksgiving holiday. This month's commodities include spaghetti sauce, egg noodles, shelf milk, pinto beans, mixed fruit, peaches, cranberry juice, tuna and chunky beef stew.

Any needy family in the Carson City area can be eligible. The household must simply sign the Daily Issuance Sheet at the community center Friday, certifying that their household's annual income does not exceed 150 percent of the poverty guidelines. Those income guidelines are currently $13,965 for a single and $18,735 for a couple. No application or proof of income will be required, only a picture ID/Drivers License. Food may be picked up for those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their picture ID.

Douglas County

Applicants sought for Douglas boards

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is currently accepting applications for appointment to the following volunteer advisory boards:

Airport Advisory Committee, Board of Equalization, Genoa Historic District Commission, Law Library Board, Parks and Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Ratemaking Committee, Senior Services Advisory Council and Water Conveyance Advisory Committee.

Board eligibility requirements vary. All applicants must be Douglas County residents. The deadline is Dec. 16. Appointments will be made at the county commissioner's meeting Jan. 5.

Virginia City

"Arsenic" at Piper's this weekend

"Arsenic and Old Lace," will be performed by the Virginia City Theater Muckers at Piper's Opera House at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.

This production, part of the Virginia City Theater Muckers' 20th season, is directed by Bill Beeson and produced by the Comstock Arts Council with support from the Nevada Arts Council.

Light refreshments will be served and there will be a cash bar.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. Group and family rates are available. Call Piper's Opera House at 847-0433 for reservations and information.

Other upcoming events are Piper's are Nevada Ballet Society's "Nutcracker" on Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; the Comstock Cowboys' Christmas show, "Christmas in the Sierra," at 6 p.m. Dec. 9, featuring a barbecue dinner and show; and the Comstock Arts Council's 146h Annual Boar's Head Feast from 6:30 -9:30 p.m. Dec. 15.
