Season of giving rolling in fast

Well, we are all getting over the massive caloric intake from Thanksgiving and looking forward to December and Christmas.

I am very lucky to be involved in helping Western Nevada Supply Co. select 200 Carson City students to participate in a holiday shopping spree. This event is the first Western Nevada Supply Co. has done here; however, it has been brightening children's lives in the Reno/Sparks area for seven years with the spree.

I want to thank everyone at Western Nevada Supply and their special friends who are coming to take so many deserving local children shopping for starting my December with a bang and a warm heart.

I have received several calls from people who want to help the needy this season.

I would suggest you give Salvation Army a call. I talked to Ken Beaton from Kiwanis, and they are helping to ring the red kettle bells and raising money to help local families in need.

You can always purchase toys and drop them off for Salvation Army, or help local children through its Toys for Joy program.

Also, don't forget toys for the Marines' Toys For Tots program. I spied some Toys For Tots barrels at Carson City Toyota. These organizations cross-check the list to make sure they help every child they can.

I also spoke to Monte Fast, director of Friends in Service Helping. He said the response to their recent food drives was amazing.

Lisa Lee of Advocates to End Domestic Violence has a full shelter. Give her a call to help sponsor children and their mothers during this difficult holiday season.

She said the children are finally in a safe environment, but being in a shelter during the holidays can be especially hard for them.

Volunteers of America children's shelter is full, with more than 10 children. Readers surprised them with a merry Christmas last year, with only three days to pull it off. Don't forget these wonderful children who, because of circumstances beyond what their little lives can control, have been put in a shelter while things get sorted out.

By court order, sometimes the children stay in the shelter for a long time. I really love the dedication of Jim Powell over there. You can adopt a child for Christmas and help him or her remember that people do care about and love them.

On Sunday, enjoy a free holiday concert by our Capital City Community Band. This will kick off the 27th concert season at the Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center.

It will feature holiday themes, marches and traditional band music.

If you took my advice and went to the outstanding "The Nutcracker," you won't want to miss Brewery Arts Center's presentation of "Christmas With Little Women."

This play was adapted from the Louisa May Alcott books that we all read and loved. This production brings the true meaning of Christmas entertainment to your family and children.
