Matthew Manual Allen, 85, a Gardnerville resident for the past 23 years, died Oct. 2, 2005, at his home. He was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Berkeley, Calif., to Howard F. and Mizpah Manuel Allen.
He attended public school in Berkeley and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1939. He attended college in the 1950s and earned a teaching degree from UC Berkeley.
He married Frances Ann Shuey on July 16, 1941, in Berkeley.
Mr. Allen taught at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp, Calif., from the late 1950s until he retired. After his retirement, he moved to Gardnerville and spent summers at Twin Lakes outside Bridgeport. He loved to fish. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by sister Carolyn Enders of Sun City, Ariz.
Among his survivors are his children Karyn Lichau of Carson City, Robert and wife Judy of Stockton, Calif., Cathy and husband Don Holzem of Woodlake, Calif., Trish and husband George Mahe of Carson City, Matt and wife Gloria of Reno and Abbie Cesena and husband Mike Sutter of California; twin brother William of Berkeley and brother Robert of Rosemont, Calif.; sister Barbara Goldstein of Rosemont; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
