WNCC soccer settles for a tie

The Western Nevada Community College women's soccer team settled for a frustrating 1-1 tie on Tuesday at Shasta College in Redding, Calif.

WNCC controlled the game throughout, but couldn't take advantage of its numerous chances. The Wildcats had more than a dozen corner kicks, but could take advantage of just one for its only goal.

"We did a good job of controlling the ball and spreading the field," WNCC coach Hillary Arthur said. "It was nice to see.

"However, whe we got into the red zone, we couldn't convert. Shasta wasn't as good as we were. We let them into the game."

WNCC scored its goal off of a corner kick by Douglas High's Jessica Maule when Melissa Dacchio scored on a header. But with 10 minutes left in the game, Shasta scored on a penalty kick.

The Wildcats were called for a foul after it appeared they had gained control of a loose ball at the edge of the goal box. "The Shasta girl fell and they called the PK on us," Arthur said. "We got all ball."

But Arthur said the game shouldn't have come down to the penalty kick. "We should have been up 5-0 at the half and scored more in the second half," she said.

WNCC will end the regular season on Saturday against Colorado Mountain in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Wildcats will then play in the Scenic West Conference Tournament on Oct. 28 and 29 in Salt Lake.
