Carson City

'Mozart' joins relief fund-raising efforts

Carson City musician, educator, and Mozart portrayer Jackie Maye and surprise guests will present a concert to benefit survivors of Hurricane Katrina at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. Requested donation is $10 or more.

"Mozart and other characters will entertain you, amuse you, and touch your heart with beautiful music and funny stories," Maye said. "Come early and fill your soul ... and have the rest of the day free to enjoy. An hour of live music is a wonderful start to the day, and 100 percent of your contribution will go to disaster relief."

Stories and crafts for preschoolers

Bring your preschooler to the Children's Museum from 10-11:30 a.m. today for a back-to-school story and craft project. The stories will continue every Tuesday.

The program is free with paid admission to the museum or free for members. Call 884-2226.

Silver City

Silver City changes times for town meetings

Silver City Town Meetings will now be held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. rather than on the first Monday, beginning with the next meeting today. Meetings will continue to be held at the Silver City Fire House on High Street.

Advisory president is Theo McCormick, secretary is Tamara Burnet and treasurer is Eric Obermayer.

The September town newsletter will is available in the Silver City Post Office. The agenda is posted at the post office and fire house.

Lake Lahontan

Bird the Carson River by canoe

Lahontan Audubon Society is sponsoring a birding-by-canoe trip along a portion of the Carson River on Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m.

The trip will last for about three hours, launching from the base of the Lahontan Dam in Lahontan (Reservoir) State Recreation Area and pulling out at the Diversion Dam near Fallon.

A $3 per car parking fee is required. Note: space is limited. Call leaders Jim Lytle at (775) 577-9641 or Bob Goodman at (775) 972-7848 to reserve a space and receive details. The leaders can also assist birders in borrowing or renting a canoe.

Virginia City

Dance project classes begin

Dancers can pirouette with the Sugar Plum Fairy and waltz with the Snow Flakes in "The Nutcracker" ballet at historic Piper's Opera House Virginia City with the Central Lyon Parks and Recreation Dance Project.

Classes in classical ballet (Russian technique), Broadway jazz, lyrical dance and kinderdance begin Wednesday at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. in Old Town Dayton.

Sessions are Mondays and Wednesdays after school hours for boys and girls ages 5 through adults, beginners to advanced.

Tuition is $44 per month for eight or nine classes. Family rate is half tuition for each member of the same family. There are no other fees.

Special technique is offered for boys.

Dancers are welcome to perform in "The Nutcracker" with the Ballet Society at Piper's Opera House in early December.

All classes are taught by professional ballerina Carolyn Oliver.
