WNCC soccer settles for tie

Down to 11 players, the Western Nevada Community College women's soccer team was able to hold up through two overtimes before settling for a 0-0 tie against Salt Lake Community College on Friday in Salt Lake.

WNCC (2-2-2) started the game with 14 players, but all three players on the bench had to come into the game after three starters became injured.

"It was a physical game," WNCC coach Hillary Arthur said. "We played well. It was a pretty evenly fought game."

Dominique Gloude pulled her groin, Melissa Dacchio pulled her hamstring and Savannah Gray hurt her knee and all three had to come out of the game.

Arthur praised Carson High's Chrissy Katzorke and Hannah Lee for filling in and playing several positions. "I know they're going to give me 110 percent," Arthur said.

Lee played center midfield, forward and right and left defender. "She definitely had an impact," Arthur said. "She created a lot of scoring opportunities."

Lee also almost score herself on a shot that was just tipped over the net by the goalie. WNCC almost won the game in overtime on another shot by Phalon Mauntel that was stopped by the goalie. "We have a drought of goals right now," Arthur said.

Katzorke also played center midfield for the first time. "She went in there and played it like she's been playing it for years," Arthur said.

Arthur also praised the play of goalie Lisa Berryman and Dayton's Sabrina Cantrell on defense. "She did awesome," said Arthur about Cantrell.

WNCC will next play at Southern Idaho on Sunday. Arthur said she Gray should be able to play and she hopes that Dacchio will be able to play, but doesn't know if Gloude will be able to go.
