A funeral for David Winn Johnson, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church on Centerville Lane in Gardnerville. Immediately following will be a celebration of his life at the church.
Mr. Johnson died Sept. 17, 2005, in Gardnerville of lung cancer. He was born May 17, 1928, in Lamanda Park, Calif., to Charles and Sophia Johnson.
He joined the Merchant Marines when he was 15 years old and served from 1943-46, then served in the U.S. Army from 1946-48.
He married Lois Jean Pinkston in 1948.
Mr. Johnson was a general contractor in California and Nevada. In 1979, he moved to Nevada and he and his partner, William Merrill, bought the Carson Valley Golf Course and operated it for two years.
He was preceded in death by his son Brad Philip.
Among his survivors are his wife of 56 years; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Bill Gookin; sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Jeannie and Kirk and Gina and grandchildren Gina and Antonio Sargis, Brandon and Natalie Wilson, Miles and Lauren Johnson, Darrell Johnson and fiance Jenny Jacobs, Sandra and Vern Still, Bradley Johnson, Debra and Jake Ream, Brian Johnson, Brooke Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren; friend Dan Shipman; and second daughter Mashelle Begovich.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society. FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
