The Carson City School District's board of trustees is sponsoring its fourth annual American Citizen Essay Contest. Three winners will be selected to receive a savings bond of $250. One winner each will come from the elementary, middle and high school levels.
This year's essay topic is: Amendment I of the United States Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Students may address a specific clause of the amendment or the entirety of the amendment. Any public, charter, private or home-schooled student in Carson City may participate. The essay should be no longer than five pages and may be as long short as the student desires. The essay may be handwritten or typed.
The first page of the essay must identify the first and last name of the student and their age, teacher's name and school. Completed essays should be taken to the Carson City School District at 1402 W. King St. no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 21.
Essays will be judged within each grade level on adherence to topic, quality of writing and originality of thought. After judging, winners will be publicly announced at a future school board meeting.
