Carson girls track wins Reed Invitational

It couldn't have been any closer - and for the Carson High girls track team any more satisfying.

Carson won the Reed Invitational in the last event of the day by winning the 4x400 meter relay on Saturday to edge Reno High. Carson finished with 111 points while Reno finished 110.

Going into the 4 x 400 relay, the Senators needed to win the event while Reno could finish no higher than fourth and that's exactly what happened as the Huskies took fourth. Making the win more impressive was the fact that Carson won the event in the slower heat.

Carson coach Todd Ackerman said it was the first time that the CHS girls won the Reed meet in his 12 years as coach. Carson's boys also had an outstanding day as they took fourth.

Julisa Gonzalez, Gloria Sosa, Kayla Sanchez and Christy Works won the 4 x 400 relay in 4 minutes. 10.91 seconds

Sanchez won two other events as she won the 100 in a season best 12.40. Teammate Andrea Kierstead was third in a season best 12.99, Douglas High's Sarah Hartley was fifth in 13.13 and for Galena, Aubrie Neil was seventh in 13.34 and Lauren Neil was eighth in 13.39.

Sanchez and Kierstead were also 1-3 in the 200. Sanchez won in a season best 25.92 and Kierstead finished in a season best 2:28. Kierstead also won the 100 hurdles in 15.66 and Alex McAlman won the discus at 133 feet, two inches.

Works took second in the 400 in 59.92 and was fourth in the 800 in 2:28. Gloria Sosa was fifth in 2:29.

Allie Collier was eighth in the 3,200 in 12:39 and Jenna Durald took seventh in the pole vault at 8-0.

"It was a great day," Ackerman said. "We got the points where we needed to. We won the events that we thought we would win. The girls were excited."

But Ackerman also noted that Collier's eight place finish and Durald's seventh place effort were just as important.

"Obviously those are little points that we need," he said. "We're not going to win by just getting first place and nothing else."

For the boys, Jeremy Gray was a double winner, winning the 100 in 11.31 and the 200 in 22.65. Douglas High's Tyler Tintsman was fifth in the 200 in 23.87 and Galena's Zack Shannon was sixth in 24.15.

Eric Walther was second in the shot put at 50-2 and Caleb Kondor was fifth at 46-1. Chad Shroy was third in the 800 with a personal best 2:01.04. The boys 4 x 400 relay of Floyd Hernandez, Gray, Caleb Carter and Shroy was second in 3:33.47. Walter was also fifth in the discus at 142-4, Adam Houghton took seventh in the high jump and Carter was seventh in the 1,600 in 4:51.
