Carson golf takes first again

The Carson High boys golf team handled tough conditions to win its fourth straight Sierra League Tournament on Tuesday at Rosewood.

Carson was the only team that wasn't blown away by the wind and blew away the rest of the field, finishing with a score of 413. Reno High, which finished second to the Senators in the previous three tournaments, struggled and settled for fourth with a 462. South Tahoe was second with a 456 and Douglas was third with a 459.

J.T. Cockerill was the low score medalist, firing a 2-over-par 74. "It was tough out there," Carson coach Rod Butler said. "It was blowing really good. The greens were really firm."

Butler said his team's score of 413 was more impressive than last week's score of 421 at Wildcreek.

"This is a lot better score for these guys," Butler said. "They played a lot better I thought this time."

Also for Carson, Scott Jenkins finished third with an 84, Matt Mitchell, Zack Rispin and Spencer Brinson all tied for fifcth with an 85 and Jordan Rogers had a 95.

"Everybody on the team had trouble with the front side," Butler said. "The all came back with strong back sides to put up decent scores for us."

Cockerill rebounded from a 41 on the front nine to shoot a 3-under 33 on the back nine.

"He made a great comeback," Butler said. "He kept it together. Everything started clicking for him on the backside."

Carson will next host its own invitational a week from today and Thursday at Silver Oak. Play begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday.
