Carson softball rolls past South Tahoe

The Carson High softball team banged out 16 hits on its way to a 16-1 win over South Tahoe on Thursday at CHS.

Carson improved to 11-3 in the Sierra League to at least stay in a tie for second. The Senators came into Thursday's game tied with Wooster.

Playing as the visitor for the second time in as many meetings with the Vikings this week at Carson, the Senators scored four runs in the second inning, six in the third and six in the fifth.

"Our bats were on fire," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "We were hitting the ball as well as I've seen us hit it. Overall I was real happy with the team. We hit the ball as hard as we've hit it."

Cassie Vondrak was the winning pitcher and was perfect through the first three innings. Vondrak settled for allowing one run on two hits through four innings while striking out five. Nikki Keller finished up, pitching a scoreless fifth in the game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Christa Casci went 4-for-4 with two triples, Kaitlin Burroughs wsa 3-for-3 with a double, Abby Rankl, Dacey Hassey and Candice Rutledge all had two hits, Vondrak doubled and Elyse Gutierrez and Katie McEwen added a hit.

Carson will face tough competition in the Reed Tournament, beginning today. The Senators will play McQueen, Wooster and Tokay, Calif., today. "It's a good time to test our young team," Vickrey said.

DAYTON SWEEPS

Sierra Barnwell was the winning pitcher in the opener and went 4-for-4 in the nightcap as Dayton swept a doubleheader against Sparks. The Dust Devils (6-4, 5-3 in the Northern 3A) won the opener 5-1 and the nightcap 10-6.

Breanne DeHaven also belted a three-run home run in the first in the opener and had five hits for Dayton. In the opener, Barnwell struck out six, walked one and scattered seven hits in pitching a complete game. She also had a hit and two runs.

Melissa Goetz and Melony Cox each had a hit, Brittany Hill had two hits, a double, an RBI and a run, DeHaven also had a double and Sara Simmons added a hit and a run.

Brittany Burrows went the distance for the win in the nightcap. Barnwell went 4-for-4 with three runs and a double, Goetz had a hit, two runs, a double and two RBI, Alicia Cox had a hit, Nicole Iractabal doubled and had an RBI, Hill had two hits, a triple, two runs and two RBI, DeHaven had three hits, an RBI and two runs, Simmons had three hits and three RBI and Burrows and Amanda Brandenburg each added a hit.

MANOGUE 5, GALENA 4

Galena came back to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score 4-4, but Manogue answered to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning. Galena's defense was its downfall as it committed seven errors. "Unfortunately our defense let us down," Galena coach Teresa Burrows said.

Megan Fincher pitched well and also went 2-for-4 for Galena. Kellie McGinley went 3-for-4 and Brianna Bullentini and Kaitlin Porter each added a hit for the Grizzlies.
