The Knights of Columbus Sierra Madre Council in Carson City recently joined efforts with the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters in building a wheelchair ramp for an elderly woman in Carson City.
The Knights sought donations of materials from merchants in Carson City, and the carpenters union for labor to build a 20-foot ramp to help the woman negotiate the entrance to her home. The project involved removing a set of steep steps and replacing them with the wooden ramp.
John and Mike Crandell of the carpenters union supplied the design and labor, and Danny Costella and Dick Moore of the Knights of Columbus coordinated the project.
"The Crandell brothers completed the construction and all that remains is sanding and painting to finish the job," Moore said.
The Knights will contribute the labor and materials to do the painting.
Others contributing include Dennis Hudson of Meeks Lumber, Todd Schafer of Select Build and Michael Britton of the Council of Carpenters.
This is the second wheelchair ramp project the Knights of Columbus has completed. The group also holds an annual food and clothing drive in November to benefit the Carson City Community Pregnancy Center.
