Nonprofits to vie for city grants at supervisors meeting

Reg Creasey is trying to find a way to spread the word about all of the activities related to Nevada Day - and he hopes to offer people even more to do during the annual celebration.

As president of Nevada Day Inc., Creasey's goal is to ensure the late-October commemoration of the state's admission to the union be educational and enjoyable, he said.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday evening will hear from an array of nonprofit groups, including Creasey's, seeking money from the city.

A fund of $290,000 will be distributed among 14 local organizations. Some of the money, $190,000, is for ongoing expenses; the remainder, $100,000, is for "one-shot" expenses, such as large pieces of equipment, said Liz Teixeira, administrative assistant to the city manager.

Requests for money exceed the budgeted amount significantly, and top $477,000, Teixeira said.

Creasey is seeking $10,000, "to promote tourism for Carson City and to gain statewide and national exposure of this growing three-day event," according to the report submitted to the city by Creasey.

"If push came to shove, the parade is what they need the money for most," Creasey said.

The group's total budget for this coming year will be $69,483.

The Community Counseling Center, for example, offers alcohol- and drug- abuse recovery programs and seeks $168,232 from the city for Spanish-English counselors who will monitor clients in various programs and work with recovery groups.

One of the supervisors' continuing goals is to continue fostering efforts against methamphetamine use.

The center received $47,000 last year.

Other groups vying for funds include the Carson City Symphony, Advocates to End Domestic Violence, Brewery Arts Center, Community Council on Youth and Rural Nevada Counties RSVP Program, Inc.

"It's always good for people to know what their money is used for," Teixeira said. "And this is very educational."

The supervisors will announce their decisions during their May 4 meeting.
