Daughters of Norway to meet at St. Paul's


The Daughters of Norway Queen Maud Lodge No. 42 will meet in at 6 p.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, at the corner of Saliman Road and Highway 50 East.


Women are invited to join the lodge that are or are married to someone of Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, or Icelandic heritage. Call 882-3729.




Cooperative Extension celebrates Earth Day


More than 20 groups and agencies, including UNR's Cooperative Extension, will be at an Earth Day celebration from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Capitol Mall in downtown Carson City. Admission is free. Call 887-2252.




Fire Safe Council plans two work weekends


The Kings Canyon Chapter of the Nevada Fire Safe Council has scheduled two "Fire Safe Work Weekends" to reduce wildfire fuels in their neighborhoods.


On Saturday, Sunday and April 29-30, Kings Canyon residents will be clearing dead or dry vegetation and other debris that poses a high wildfire risk. The Carson City Fire Department will be bringing three dump trailers and three Dumpsters recently purchased for such efforts. Call 887-2252.

Author to sign books in Douglas County


Cherry Lyon Jones, author of "More than Petticoats: Remarkable Alaska Women," will be signing copies of her book at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Book Den at 1328 Highway 395 No. 305 in Gardnerville. Call 783-1100.




Kiwanis holds talent competition Saturday


The Kiwanis Club of Carson Valley will host its eighth annual Stars of Tomorrow Talent Competition on Saturday. A silent auction begins at 6 p.m. with the talent competition starting at 7 p.m. at the C.V.I.C. Hall in Minden.


Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children or $30 per family from local Kiwanians and at the door. Call 267-9675.

High Desert Horsemen hold schooling show


High Desert Horsemen's second annual Hairy Horse Schooling show is 9 a.m. Saturday at 11225 Silver Lane in Stagecoach. Halter, English and Western performance, driving, and speed classes will be available, as well as many fun events.


High point awards will take place at the end of the day.

Run supports hotline


The Crises Call Center's annual fundraising Run 4 Life is at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hidden Valley Regional Park in Reno. There will be a 10K and 5K run and a 5K fun race/walk. Registration is $23 until Friday. On race day, registration is $25.
