(Staff report) - A Carson City chiropractor will be tried on felony tax charges in June after pleading not guilty to charges stemming from tax filings.
Lisa M. Getas, 43, made her initial appearance in federal court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was released on a personal recognizance bond.
She was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 15 and charged with three counts of making and subscribing a false tax return, statement or other document, and two counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false and fraudulent income tax returns.
According to the indictment, Getas allegedly stated she earned $84,011 in rental real estate, royalties, partnerships and trusts when she knew the amount of income was "substantially greater."
Count 2 charges Getas did the same thing in 2001, under-reporting those earnings as $129,062 when she knew it was greater, and again in 2002 when she allegedly claimed $109,047 knowing she made more.
A trial is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 20 before U.S. District Judge Brian Sandoval.
If convicted, she faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.
